Obituary of Madelyn Marie Ely
Madelyn Marie Smith was born in Monroe, Michigan on June 10, 1935 from the union of Max N. and Marie M (Kilpatrick) Smith. She graduated in 1952 from Monroe High School. On October 10, 1953 at the Trinity Lutheran Parsonage Madelyn and the love of her life Jack C. Ely would be joined together in Holy Matrimony by the Rev. Herbert B. Fehner. The couple would be blessed by three wonderful sons. Madelyn would spend ten years employed at the former People’s Savings Bank before it changed to Standard Federal Bank.
Madelyn loved to sew, she loved gardening, and loved the game of golf, of which she played extremely well. She loved spending time with her grandchildren but treasured taking care of her four boys the most. She was a member of the Monroe Missionary Baptist Church for over twenty years. Madelyn was an excellent soprano in the church choir for 25 years.
Madelyn Marie Ely, age 86, of Monroe, Michigan passed away peacefully on Thursday; July 1, 2021 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Monroe. In addition to her own passing, she was preceded by her parents: Max and Beulah Smith; and her brother: Norman Smith on April 27, 2017.
To cherish her memory, she leaves her beloved husband of sixty-seven years: Jack C. Ely; three sons: David (Deborah) Ely of Carleton, Mark A. Ely of Ann Arbor, and Gary (Gayle) Ely of Temperance; seven grandsons: Ryan (Stephanie) Ely, Adam (Jennifer) Ely, Craig (Megan) Ely, Matthew (Kylie) Ely, Scott (Ashley) Ely, Dustin Coressel, and Garrett Coressel; three granddaughters: Kathy (Bradley) Cornett, Paige Coressel (Ashley Flynn) and Aspen Coressel (fiancé Paul Bahm); Niece: Jana (Anthony); and eighteen great grandchildren.
Friends may gather on Monday: July 5, 2021 from 4:00pm until 8:00pm at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe, 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185. A Celebration of Her Life will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday; July 6, 2021 also at Merkle’s with Pastor Roy Southerland officiating. Burial will follow at the LaSalle Township Cemetery on Swartz Road in LaSalle, Michigan.
