Obituary of Derek Young

Derek Young was born on December 25, 1982, in Monroe, Michigan. He was one of two children born from the union of David Young and Dawn (McPhail) Young. Derek graduated from Monroe High School with the class of 2001. He then furthered his education by obtaining his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan in 2005. Three years later, he earned his Master of Business Administration degree from Wayne State University.

 

Derek believed in lifelong learning.   He constantly challenged himself to grow intellectually, to gain knowledge and develop new skills.  He prioritized education, often reading about new subjects or projects.  A true intellectual with an entrepreneurial spirit, Derek wasn’t afraid to invest time and resources in a new business idea.

 

Above anything, Derek treasured the time he spent with his niece and nephew. No matter what they were doing, he genuinely just enjoyed being in their presence.

 

Derek Young, age 40, of Monroe, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday; June 13, 2023. His passing was preceded by his father: David; his maternal grandfather: Donald McPhail; and a maternal aunt: Tena McPhail.

 

To cherish his memory, he leaves: his loving mother: Dawn Young of Monroe; a sister: Danielle (Stephen) Rumple; his maternal grandmother: Patricia McPhail; a niece: Gabrielle Rumple; and a nephew: Reid Rumple.

 

No public services are planned, and a private burial of his cremated remains will be scheduled for a later date. Derek’s care has been entrusted to Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe; 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185.
