Obituary of Gregory Dale Speer
Gregory” Greg” Dale Speer was born on September 5, 1955 in Bedford, Indiana. He was one of three children born to the union of Edward Dale and Maxine (Piatt) Speer. Greg attended Bedford High School in Bedford, graduating in 1973. After high school Greg enlisted in the United States Army and was very proud to serve his country. He obtained the rank of Sergeant before medically retiring from the United States Army in 1990. Greg would then further his education at Monroe County Community College in Monroe, Michigan receiving his Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy.
Greg and his future bride, the former Dorothy Marie Aldridge, would meet while enlisted in the United States Army. They married on May 16, 1987 in Woodland Beach in Monroe. Greg worked for many years at Henry Ford Health Sysrem, and for eight years as a respiratory therapist at the Toledo Hospital before retiring in 2009. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Monroe, Michigan. He enjoyed science fiction movies and books and was always reading a book or something of interest. He loved being outdoors in nature and traveling to Colorado, New Mexico, or any destination in Michigan above the Zilwaukee Bridge. He loved all his dogs having many over the years whether they came from a rescue of from the Humane Society.
Gregory “Greg” Dale Speer, age 66, of Monroe, Michigan passed away on Saturday; April 30, 2022 at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. His passing was preceded by his parents; Edward and Maxine Speer and one brother; Mark Speer.
To cherish Greg’s memory his leaves his loving wife of thirty-four years: Dorothy Marie Speer of Monroe; one son: William “Bill” (Megan) Hoggard of Plainfield, Indiana; one sister: Tammara Speer of Bedford, Indiana; four grandchildren: Riley, Maddy, Bailey, and Tristin; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews; and sisters and brothers-in-laws.
Friends may gather on Friday; May 6, 2022 from 2:00pm until 8:00pm at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway Monroe, Michigan 48161 (734) 241-7070. A Celebration of Greg’s Life will be held at 11:00am on Saturday; May 7, 2022 also at Merkle’s with Sister Elaine Aldridge from the Immaculate Heart of Mary, officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the members of the Monroe Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1138. Cremation will follow through Covenant Cremation of Erie, Michigan. Greg’s cremated remains will be interred at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek, Michigan at a later date.
