Obituary of Joyce Ackerman

Joyce Lorraine Dickinson was born on August 24, 1931, in Owosso, Michigan. She was one of three daughters born from the union of Orlando Gale and Myrtle (Ryan) Dickinson. After graduating from Owosso High School, Joyce would continue her education at the Sherwood Institute of Chicago. She was the high school sweetheart  of  Kent B. Ackerman and they were later joined in marriage on July 21, 1951, in Owosso. Together, the happy couple would be blessed with the birth of three children.  

For many years Joyce was the owner of the Julie K. Shop in Monroe.  She was also quite gifted as a musician and taught piano to anyone willing to learn.   Joyce was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Monroe where she served in many different capacities within the congregation.   From being the Treasurer, to serving as Chairperson of many fundraisers, Joyce would often be heard belting out hymns within the congregation . She was a member of the Thrift Shop Association of Monroe for many years . 

Joyce was an avid traveler with her husband , Kent.   She enjoyed exploring our great nation so much so that she once traveled across the country to New Mexico in a camper just to visit her sister.   In 2018, Joyce was nominated for the Monroe Aging Consortium’s Miss Senior Monroe County.   Although she didn’t win the pageant she found the opportunity to tell her story extremely gratifying.     

Joyce Lorraine Ackerman, age 90, of Monroe passed away at 1:10pm on Tuesday; February 1, 2022, at the IHM Senior Living Community.   Her passing was preceded by her parents; her husband: Kent; and two sisters: Virginia Uhlman and Elaine Slusher.                                          

To cherish her memory, she leaves children: Amy Ackerman of Newport, Michigan, and Edward Ackerman of St. Cloud, Florida.

No public services are planned at this time.   Joyce’s care has been entrusted to Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe; 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185. Cremation has taken place through Covenant Cremation of Erie.   Interment will be at Florida National Cemetery and laid to rest with her husband .
