Obituary of Raymond Hobert Sweat

Raymond Hobert Sweat was born on July 10, 1932 in Monroe, Michigan. He was one of three sons born to the union of Vonnie Hobert and Rosa Evelyn (Cox) Sweat. Ray was a graduate of Ida High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict where he earned a Bronze Star. On December 30, 1963 he wed the former Bobbie Faye Yoakum in New Tazewell, Tennessee. The couple enjoyed fifty-eight years of marriage and were blessed with a son and two daughters.  A talented carpenter, Ray was employed by the Carpenters Union Local 1301 in Monroe for more than thirty years before retiring in 1988.

Ray utilized his carpentry skills building ramps for those in need as a volunteer for the United Way’s Project Ramp. He also enjoyed exploring the creative side of woodworking, making many bird decoys and décor. One of Ray’s favorite places to be was outside working in his yard meticulously maintaining the landscaping. A loving father and grandfather, he never missed his grandchildren’s ball games or band concerts.

As an active member of the Baptist faith, Ray taught Sunday School at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church and served as treasurer of the Southeastern Baptist Association for many years. He brought the Gospel of the Lord to the sick and elderly by arranging church services for nursing home residents for twenty years. Ray read his Bible and church literature frequently. He also kept up the news of the day. A music lover, he especially enjoyed Gospel singing.
