Obituary of Imogene Mills
Imogene Averitt was born on February 23, 1928, in Nebo, Kentucky. She was a twin, one of three children born from the union of Joseph Herbert and Clara Regina (Newbold) Averitt. Imogene would attend and graduate from Wayne High School with the class of 1946.
From her marriage to Jack Edward Mills, Imogene, would be blessed with four children. She was the quintessential mother and growing up during the Great Depression taught her to be frugal and thrifty. Imogene cared for the needs of her family as a homemaker although she was employed as a Secretary for Ford Motor Company for five years. In her later years, she enjoyed working as a Red Coat at The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village in Dearborn.
Imogene had an appreciation for nature and the outdoors. She loved traveling the walking trails in Carleton with her twin, Emogene, so the duo could enjoy the beauty of their surroundings and to birdwatch. She also enjoyed gardening, and even though she herself wasn’t born with a green thumb, it made her appreciate those who were even more. Her annual attempts at planting brought her much joy and she could often be heard saying, “as long as the plants grow”.
Imogene was talented with her hands, creating clothes for her four sons as well as beautiful doll clothing for her grandchildren. She provided cherished quilts for many family and friends. Imogene was very knowledgeable, dabbling in furniture reupholstering, as well. In addition to all the previously mentioned crafting hobbies, she spent countless hours creating beautiful pieces of stained glass.
