Obituary of Cyriel Camiel Devos

Cyriel Camiel “Cy” Devos was born in Berkey, Ohio on June 22, 1919. He was the eldest of four children born to Alois and Madeline (Staelens) Devos. From a young age Cy began farming alongside his parents.   He continued to work in agriculture for more than fifty years until retiring in 1989.

On April 7, 1945, Cy wed the former Rose Mominee at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Erie, Michigan.   Together the couple enjoyed enjoyed fifty-six years of marriage.

Cy was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and Moose Lodge both of Monroe.   He enjoyed spending time with his son fishing on Lake Erie.   Cy was very friendly and a “happy go-lucky” person.   Anyone who had an opportunity to meet him quickly grew to love him.   Even after so many years of hard work on the farm, Cy, remained active in golden years never complaining of aches and pains.   He was extremely independent continuing to live alone, drive, shop for groceries, and even cook all his own meals (often his favorite BBQ chicken balls!) into his second century of life.   Cy was known to say that the key to longevity is to “be kind to people”.

Cyriel Camiel “Cy” Devos, age 102, of Monroe, Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday; August 1, 2021.   His passing was preceded by his parents; wife: Rose Devos; infant daughter: Diane Devos; two brothers: Camiel Devos and Julian Devos; and sister: Rachael Munson.

Left to cherish his memory are two daughters:  Judy (Arthur) Oblinger and Karen (Richard) Jones; a son: Charles Devos; five grandchildren: John Oblinger, James (Reta) Oblinger, Jennifer (Dean) Mueller, Virginia (Dr. Matthew) Cawood, and Johnathan Devos; five great grandchildren: Cody Oblinger, Cami Oblinger, Dr. Nic (Maeve) Mueller, Emily Mueller, and Madalyn Cawood; and many nieces and nephews.
