Obituary of Virginia Mae Ellison
Virginia Mae Layman was born on December 9, 1931 in Toledo, Ohio. She was the youngest of two daughters born from the union of Walter Layman and Bernice Layman. Virginia would attend and graduate from Woodward High School in Toledo, Ohio with the Class of 1949.
Virginia was involved with several bowling leagues in the Monroe area and she especially enjoyed knocking down the pins at the Nortel Lanes in Monroe. She also cherished the times she played poker and other card games with her family and friends.
Although, she could be quite stubborn, she was well-loved and respected. She quickly became a surrogate grandmother to everyone she met and this even transcended into a position with the Monroe Public School Systems. For the schools, she served as a Foster Grandmother for many years. Virginia relished in this role, helping to guide and mold young minds, she assisted the students with their daily assignments.
She loved to shop, and she a wonderful gift giver to those around her.
Virginia Mae Ellison, age 89 of Monroe, passed away at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital on Wednesday December 23, 2020 at 5:22pm. In addition to her parents her passing was preceded by three sons: Mike Nofzinger, Mark Nofzinger, and Rolland Driver; and one sister: Betty Stamm.
To cherish her memory, Virginia leaves two daughters: Marica (Les) Vandercook of Leesburg, Florida, and Marlene Gill of New Tazewell, Tennessee; eight grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren.
Friends may gather from 3:00pm until 6:00pm on Monday, December 28, 2020 at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe; 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185. Due to the COVID19 pandemic and the State of Michigan’s mandate, guests will be limited in number, face coverings are mandatory, and no food or beverage will be permitted inside the building.
