George Meredith Lajiness, born July 18, 1927, passed away Monday morning, June 17th. He was born in Monroe, Michigan. He was the son of the late George Lajiness and Elsie (Rowe) Lajiness. .
George married the love of his life, the former Joanne Kirk, in Monroe, Michigan on February 19, 1949. From this union came the birth of two children, Cathy Wertenberger (deceased) and Sandra Frankhouse (David). Surviving are 5 grandsons, Wayne Wertenberger (Susan), Jeff Wertenberger (Judy), Jared Wertenberger (Susie), Erik Frankhouse and Aaron Frankhouse. Also surviving, 4 great-grandchildren, Megan, Bailey, Beau and Colt Wertenberger, and 5 step great grandchildren. A grandaughter Lisa and step great-grandson, Raffy, preceded him in death.
George attended Monroe High School and orphaned at the age of seventeen. He then enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and proudly served his country honorably. He served in the Phillippines, Okinawa and Hawaii for 3 years. He also spent one year with the National Guard.
George supported the family as a Set-up Man for Ford Motor Company working thirty-two years before his retirement. He then worked for twenty-seven years performing maintenance for his church, Redeemer Fellowship. For many years, George bowled on the church team and played softball until he was 58.
George was quite the character. He also cherished the time he spent with his family and especially, Joanne. He was a very thoughtful person trying to look out for others. George was skilled with his hands and spent much time building and collecting clocks. He enjoyed playing cards and often played euchre with friends.
George, age 85, passed away at Fountainview of Monroe on Monday, June 17, 2013.
Friends may gather from 6:00pm until 8:00pm; Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe, 14567 South Dixie Highway (734) 241-7070 (formerly Bennett Funeral Services). A Celebration of His Life will be held at 12:00pm, Friday, June 21, 2013 at Redeemer Fellowship Church, 5305 Evergreen Drive in Monroe, Michigan. The Rev. Joseph Atkinson, Pastor Emeritus of the church will officiate. Inturnment will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle with a brief military service at 3pm.
