Obituary of Peggy Sue Smith

Peggy Sue Harris was born in Monroe on August 31, 1960.   She was the daughter of Lawrence Harris and Gloria Jane (Bussell) Harris.   When, Peggy was thirteen months old her mother passed away, and she was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Hazel (Bussell) and Archie Cosby.   She attended Monroe High School.  

Peggy married the love of her life, James “Bo” Smith on October 2, 1976 at Kentucky Park Missionary Baptist Church.   From this union came the birth of a son:  Shane.   Although, Peggy cared for the needs of her family as a homemaker first and foremost she also spent many years working retail.   In addition, Peggy worked cleanup from time to time for Laborers Local 1191 in Detroit.   She was blessed to raise her granddaughter, Amiya Smith as her own.  

Peggy and Bo had a special relationship.   They enjoyed camping Up North, riding motorcycles, perch fishing and boating, and vacationing in Florida.   Peggy also attended NASCAR events although she was more for the atmosphere than the actual race.   She loved to travel with her sisters.

Peggy Sue Smith, age 58, of Monroe passed away under hospice care after a brief illness on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.   Her passing was preceded by her birth parents:  Lawrence and Gloria Harris; her adoptive father:  Archie Cosby; mother and father-in-law:  Donna and R.J. Smith; grandparents:  Clarence and Donna Bussell; sister-in-law:  Betty Winkleman; brother-in-law:  Robert J. Smith; three nephews; and furbaby:  Harley.

To cherish her memory she leaves her beloved husband of forty-two years:  Bo of Monroe; a son:  Shane of Monroe; granddaughter:  Amiya of Monroe; mother:  Hazel Cosby of Monroe; four siblings:  Roger (Beth) Cosby of Monroe, Patricia Woodfin and Sharon Lyons both of Seacrest, Florida, and Karyn Cooley of Monroe; sisters and brothers-in-law:  Bobbie (Rick) Soleau of Franklin, North Carolina, Donna (Ricky) Fussell of Macclenny, Florida, Arletta “Kay” Uran, Tina (Earl) Standifer, and Roy Smith all of Monroe; numerous nieces and nephews; and her four-legged companion:  Booboo.

Friends may gather from 2:00pm-8:00pm on Friday, December 28, 2018 and from 9:00am-11:00am on Saturday, December 29 at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway (734) 241-7070.   A Celebration of Her Life will follow at 11:00am also at Merkle’s with Pastor Bob Baltrip officiating.   Procession will follow to Roselawn for burial.
