Eric Leon Opland
August 19, 1952 - March 23, 2012
Eric Leon Opland was born in Laurium, Michigan on August 19, 1952. He was one of four children born to the union of the late Walter and Cecelia (Olander) Opland.
Eric obtained his Associate's Degree from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI. After finishing his degree, he moved to Benton Harbor, MI to work at the Cook Nuclear Power Plant. His experience in Nuclear Power brought him to Monroe to work at Fermi Nuclear Power Plant, where he has worked for the past 30 years.
Eric had many interests; building and fixing cars, music, and animals. His love of music was passed on to his son. He fostered his son's love of music by encouraging him to play the bass guitar. Eric also loved all his pets including 4 parrots and 7 cats. He was also an avid history buff, especially World War II.
Eric Leon Opland age 59 of Monroe passed away at 6:41pm, Friday, March 23, 2012 at Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton. In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by a brother: Paul Opland and a sister: Beatrice (Opland) Greif.
To cherish his memory he leaves a beloved wife: Stephanie Reed-Opland of Monroe; his son: Steven Opland of Monroe; a brother: Bruce (Gloria) Opland of Port St. Lucie, Florida; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends may gather from 12:00pm until 3:00pm on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. A Celebration of His Life will take place at 3:00pm also at Merkle's. Reverend Bruce Lucas pastor of East Ida Immanuel Lutheran Church will officiate.
