Obituary of Corey Bomia
Cornelius Henry Bomia was born in Monroe, Michigan on March 26, 1964. He was the son of Edward Douglas Bomia and Carol Ann (Raymond) Bomia. Corey attended Erie Mason Schools where he lettered on the football team. He graduated with the Class of 1982.
Corey was born a hard worker. For many years he worked more than one job at a time. He was employed by Shay’s Sleep Shop for more than a decade, worked in excavation, and was employed by Odell’s Hauling on and off for eight years. At Odell’s, Corey caught the eye of the boss’s daughter, Melissa Ann Miller. The couple was joined in holy matrimony on September 10, 1994, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Erie. In 2000, Corey took a position with Ferrell Gas in Monroe. He transported liquid propane working as a Delivery Specialist.
In 1983, Corey joined the Erie Township Fire Department. For the next forty-one years he served his community with dedication and diligence. He earned the respect of his fellow firefighters not only in his own community but throughout Monroe County. Corey served in various roles from Lieutenant, Captain, and finally Assistant Chief. He loved to mentor new firefighters serving as a Training Instructor for Erie, taught at the Monroe County Fire Academy, and served as a CPR instructor. Corey was also the President of the Erie Firefighters Association.
Outside of the fire department, Corey loved the outdoors whether hunting or fishing. Uncle Corey to everyone he met, he taught Hunter Safety Courses. He was also an avid camper, tent camping once and then glamping after that. They created many wonderful memories in a pop-up prior to graduating to a travel trailer. Family trips to Hayes State Park on Wampler's Lake were a favorite destination although Sugar Loaf Resort in Chelsea also registered epic experiences. He also stayed active with co-ed and men’s league softball.
In 2021, following a pancreatic cancer diagnosis Corey retired from Ferrell Gas. Although most people might have crawled under a rock, Corey doubled down and recommitted himself to the community, continuing to serve Erie Township as a firefighter. He was an inspiration to many.
