Obituary of Shirley Ann Curley

Please share a memory of Shirley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Shirley A. Aichler was born in Monroe, Michigan on December 21, 1936. She was one of five children born from the union of Harold and Marguerite (Bladell) Aichler. She graduated from Monroe High School with the class of 1955, and shortly thereafter married the love of her life: Lyle Curley on August 6, 1955, at Saint Michael's Church.

As an assistant coach for the Custer Girls' Softball Team, she inspired young athletes with her enthusiasm and dedication. For fourteen years, Shirley worked as a bus aide for the Monroe Public School System. She was also a committed member of many organizations. Her involvement with the ARC allowed her to contribute to meaningful causes and advocate for individuals with disabilities. Additionally, she played a significant role in the ladies' auxiliary for the LaSalle Township Volunteer Fire Department, where she supported the many brave firefighters, such as her husband, and their families.

Her compassion extended beyond her local community. As part of the American Red Cross disaster teams, Shirley provided essential aid and comfort to those affected by natural disasters and emergencies. Her fundraising efforts were legendary. She dedicated countless hours to raising funds for important causes such as Jerry Lewis’ Muscular Dystrophy Association, the March of Dimes, and cancer research.

She was actively involved in her church, and as a member of the Saint Michael Altar Society she contributed to the church’s various services and events. Additionally, as a member of the Lady Knights of Columbus Council Number 1266, she volunteered to support charitable activities and encourage community spirit.

Shirley had a particular fondness for the casino; however, her day wasn't complete without savoring donuts and sipping on a hot cup of coffee. She believed that her long, healthy life was due to her love of eating pickled herring. In her leisure time, she enjoyed watching game shows and classic westerns on television.

On occasion, Shirley would often feed and watch her neighbors' chickens. Her generosity knew no bounds, touching the hearts of many. She also had a passion for Disney, visiting this magical destination five times, and her home was a testament to this love, decorated with Disney memorabilia and charming M.I. Hummel figurines.

Shirley Curley, age 87, of Monroe, passed away at 4:28am  while under the care of Heartland Hospice at Monroe Springs Rehab and Nursing Center, on Saturday July 20, 2024. Her passing was preceded by her parents; her husband Lyle; a son: Randy; and her daughter: Karen.
