Mama Shirley and I became kindred spirits during their 1990-1998 7yr period living here in San Antonio, where Dad and she chose to retire. They had come to love TX from their visits that began in 1975. As others previously shared, we truly had many good times: birthdays, holidays, home visits, meals, parks, swimming and hiking outings, sleepovers…
Even tho we were exceptionally blessed having the unbelievable privilege of her mothering and grandmothering here, at times it was bittersweet too. It was then I’d console Mom when she sorely missed you Sisters: she missed her daughters and she missed your families. Sometimes there was that cost of aching voids, empty and yearning times when one simply wants to reach out and touch, to cry, help, hug, kiss, laugh, shop, even work together, but can’t because a 1000miles separate you.
Thankfully Mom (& Dad) had a super loving church family also near their home in SA, across town 50min from us in Schertz. It was great for them; and they were so good for their church too. They all amazingly bonded together in regular worship, study, home groups, and activities. Mom loved it.
Also on the 2nd of May in 1994, Mom became like my Second Mom, as Lynn and my Mama (67yo) unexpectedly and instantly died at home from a heart attack. And now both moms share the same passing anniversary day.
On 13May1997 when Cindy’s solo visit flight coincided with Lynn & Don’s flight at SA airport, Mom (& Dad) managed to pull off more than one secret! Lynn & Don also had a surprise of a lifetime with me standing there looking shocked at first, then immediately happy, wearing my oversized white “Baby Inside” T-shirt. We hadn’t shared yet that Luke “was inside.” (He was born Dec’97, our fifth.) We also celebrated Sam’s 11th birthday on that same momentous and fun day!
Shirley was, is still now, and forever my soul sister. Forever loved. Forever remembered. She simply beat me on our journey to eternity.

As shared from my siblings, my memories with Nana are some of my fondest from my childhood.
Having her and Papa in our young lives were everything to us! I treasure all the times we spent with them throughout the years.
She will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Love you Nana! I know you’re having a party up in heaven with papa and Jesus!

Mom loved to shop and was frugal too. I recall shopping at Kmart and Bargain City in Monroe with her and my sisters. She was able to keep us well clothed and fed on sometimes a limited income. She even allowed me to grocery shop for the family, learned a lot from that experience, trying to shop well and healthy on a set amount she would give me.
She was a stay at home mom most of my time at home. However, she did work at a fast food restaurant when I was an older teenager. Interestingly, I worked at the same restaurant she did! It was called Coney Island, located on Monroe Street next to the former Kmart.
When she and dad moved to San Antonio in 1991 we were so blessed. Our kids had grandparents living near them. They often got to spend time with them on at least a weekend a month, sometimes more often. Also, together we were able to enjoy holidays and other activities, visiting State Parks and local parks.
We will miss you Mom, but we know you have no more pain or suffering and have eternity to enjoy with Jesus now!!

Nana Shirley was such a loving and kind person! I remember my time as a child going over to Nana and Papa’s house when they lived in San Antonio and spending weeks and weekend during the summer with them. Some of my fondest memory as a kid with my siblings!
The love that she had for the Lord and her family was amazing. She will be greatly missed, but continued to be loved. Can’t wait to reunite with her and Papa in Heaven!
