Obituary of Kenneth Carl Oelke

Please share a memory of Kenneth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Kenneth Carl Oelke was born on September 20, 1945 in Monroe, Michigan. He was one of three children, but the only son born to Kenneth D. and Shirley M. (Niemann) Oelke.  He was raised in the village of Scofield, Michigan.  Kenny, as he was affectionately known, was raised, baptized, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.  He attended Monroe High School, graduating with the class of 1964. Following high school, Kenny enrolled at Stautzenberger College where he obtained his Associate’s degree in Business.

Kenny began working at Gruber’s Food Market at the age of sixteen eventually transitioning to Food Town. His perseverance was rewarded as he obtained the title of Head Dairy Manager.  Kenny’s career spanned more than forty-two years.  He retired in 2004 when Food Town was purchased by Kroger.  For more than sixty-one years, Kenny gave back to his community as a member of the Exeter Volunteer Fire Department.  Well respected by the other firefighters, he rose to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief, serving in that capacity for several years.

During their childhood years in Scofield, Kenny met Sharon Servey.  The story is told that she chased him around the playground pulling at his shirt tag until it eventually tore off, although the version of the story may change depending on who might be sharing it. Eventually, Kenny asked that young lady to be his bride and she of course, said yes.  On April 27, 1968 at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Monroe, Kenny and Sharon exchanged vows.  They were blessed with two wonderful children: Holly and Brad.  Kenny’s most cherished role on this earth was being a strong provider for his wife and children.
