Obituary of JoAnn Fields

Jo Ann Ellington was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 4, 1958.  She was the third of six daughters born to William and Helen Dorothy (Blount) Ellington.  Jo Ann attended Mt. Healthy High School in Cincinnati, Ohio where she not only earned her diploma but also met the love of her life, Stephen Wendell Fields. 

Following graduation, on June 5, 1976, Jo Ann was joined in marriage to Stephen.  The couple was soon blessed with the birth of two daughters and “Jody”, as she was lovingly known, cared for the needs of her family as a homemaker.  As the wife of an Army Officer who moved frequently, this was a most challenging endeavor.  Still, she made sure the girls enjoyed the many varied experiences of living all over this great country and in Europe.

When Stephen was a Company Commander in Germany, Jo Ann fulfilled her responsibilities as the Commander’s Wife, serving as a surrogate mother to more than 100 soldiers and their families stationed far from home.  Her work was so exceptional it was recognized by the Division Commander with a special commendation.

Jo Ann enjoyed her life as a homemaker.  It allowed her to be active with raising and educating her girls to the wonderful women they became.  She thrived on keeping her house in order.  When her daughters were young, Jody volunteered at their school, logging more hours than any of the teachers or paid staff.  Although Jody could not imagine greater joy than being a mother, she experienced it firsthand when she became a grandmother.  “Nana” was by far her favorite title.

Before her injuries and illness stole her mobility, Jo Ann was an avid crafter, especially skilled in sewing.  Among her many projects were stuffed fabric Easter baskets, which are still used by family and friends.  Jo Ann also enjoyed collecting antique dolls, miniatures and quilts.  She truly loved all animals, but most definitely had a soft spot for dogs, cats and donkeys.  She could often be found feeding the ducks which swam in the creek behind her home.  In her later years, she would spend many hours watching the squirrels, rabbits and chipmunks (whom she referred to as lawn hamsters) playing in the yard.

JoAnn Fields, age 65, of Monroe passed away at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital on Tuesday; November 21, 2023. Her passing was preceded by her parents; three sisters: Susie, Julie, and Amie; as well as several of her four-legged friends.

To cherish her memory, she leaves her beloved husband of forty-seven and a half years:  Stephen Fields; two daughters: Holly (Richard) Lee and Amanda (Mike) Spooneybarger, two sisters: Diane and Debbie; two grandchildren: Chloe and Morgan.

No public services are planned at this time.  Her care has been entrusted to Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway, Monroe, Michigan 48161 (734) 241-7070.  Cremation has taken place through the on-site crematory, Covenant Cremation of Erie, Michigan.
