Obituary of William Ira Koenecke
William Ira Koenecke was born in Sidney, Nebraska on July 4, 1946. He was one of three children born from the union of William Lou and Marian Lucille (Mynster) Koenecke. Bill, as he would be commonly known, graduated from Sidney High School with the Class of 1964. While in high school, Bill was a true athlete. He fearlessly competed in wrestling and repeatedly displayed his strength and agility as both an offensive and defensive tackle on the football team. His athletic prowess extended to the track team, where he excelled as a shot put and discus thrower. Following graduation, Bill proudly served in the United States Air Force.
As an adult, Bill found solace and joy in various aspects of his life. His dedication to his faith was evident through his involvement with his church, particularly as an active member of the men's club at Bethany Baptist Church. He cherished the fellowship and camaraderie that came with being part of this community.
Bill was loyal and displayed an unwavering support for the University of Michigan football team. As a devoted fan of the Wolverines, he had a unique request for those who watched the game with him - silence. He believed firmly that being quiet during the game allowed him to fully immerse himself in the experience.
Bill loved spending time on the golf courses scattered throughout Michigan. The challenge of the game brought out his competitive spirit, and he treasured the satisfaction of a well-played round.
One of Bill’s true passions was working with his hands. Woodworking was his chosen craft, and he poured his creativity and craftsmanship into making beautiful pieces. From birdhouses and a rocking horse to plant holders, nightstands, and even patio furniture. His talent was evident in each meticulously crafted item. Bill took great pride and satisfaction in sharing his handmade creations with loved ones.
Bill was also known for his quiet nature. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and found contentment in spending time with family. He loved his children dearly and was eager to make the journey back to Monroe from his home in Kansas to be cared for by them.
