Obituary of William Wallace Hand

William Wallace “Bill” Hand was born on February 8, 1947, in Alpena, Michigan to William “Bill” and Elaine (Behnke) Hand. Bill graduated from Alpena High School with the Class of 1965. He furthered his education at Michigan State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in packaging in 1970. Bill spent most of his career at Packaging Corporation of American (PCA) in Plymouth, Michigan where he was a Design Manager for twenty-five years. Bill proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1970 to 1973 as a supply officer. He was charged with overseeing a portable air base.

Bill met Kathy Luft while attending Michigan State University. The couple married on October 9, 1970, and spent fifty-two busy and happy years together. Bill was so proud of his two sons: Ryan and Jason. He was always very supportive of their swimming team, 4-H, and band activities.

A talented musician, Bill played the baritone horn with the PNA Concert Band in Toledo, Ohio for thirty years alongside his neighbors, Dan and Beth. Simply put: Bill was one of the “good guys” in this world.

William Wallace “Bill” Hand, age 76, of LaSalle, Michigan passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. His passing was preceded by his parents.

To cherish his memory, he leaves his wife: Kathy Hand; his two sons: Ryan Hand of LaSalle and Jason (Maria) Hand of Hersey, Michigan; and his three grandchildren: Anderson, Bennett, and Cecelia.

Friends may gather on Tuesday; September 5, 2023, from 10:00am until 11:00am at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway, Monroe, Michigan 48161 (734) 241-7070.  A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at 11:00am also at Merkle’s followed by a procession to LaSalle Township Cemetery in LaSalle for burial.
