Obituary of Kristen Ann Calkins

Please share a memory of Kristen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Kristen Ann Calkins was born on January 6, 1965, in Monroe, Michigan. She was one of three daughters born to Herman Amolsch and Patricia (Lazette) Amolsch. She graduated with the Class of 1983, from St. Mary’s Academy in Monroe.  She married the love of her life, Paul Calkins, in 1992. The couple enjoyed twenty-six years of marriage and were blessed with three boys.  Kristen was employed as a tax preparer at H&R Block for more than twenty years.  She also worked as an aide to special needs children at South Pointe Scholars in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

A devout Christian, Kristen was a very active parishioner of NorthBrook Church in Carleton, Michigan for many years. Her caring and giving nature led her to travel alongside her fellow church members on mission trips to Virginia, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Kristen also frequently participated in small group Bible study. Although she could be a social butterfly, Kristen’s main focus was always on her family. A loving and caring mother, she doted on her sons. Kristen even indulged them in video games when they were younger, especially “Mario Party”, in which she was very competitive! She also enjoyed spending time with her family on visits to the charming Bavarian-style city of Frankenmuth, Michigan.

Kristen learned to bake the most delicious cookies from her mother. Her oven was especially hot at Christmastime. Kristen often tuned into cooking shows and movies on the Hallmark channel. She never missed an episode of “Big Brother” along with her youngest son, Austin. Never one to pass up a “good deal”, it seemed Kristen had packages delivered every other day!

Kristen Ann Calkins, age 58, of Monroe, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on Monday; August 28, 2023 at Rivergate Terrace in Riverview, Michigan. Her passing was preceded by her mother: Patricia Amolsch and her husband: Paul Calkins on January 14, 2018.

To cherish her memory, she leaves her three sons: Brandon Calkins of Lambertville, Michigan, Jeffrey (Abigayle) Calkins, and Austin Calkins both of Romulus, Michigan; her father: Herman Amolsch; two sisters: Kelly (Mitch) Brower and Kimberly Collum; seven nieces and nephews: Aryn, Andy, Megan, Ashley, Adam, Trisha, and Steffeni; her best friend: Jenny Howell, whom she met at church; her good friend and co-worker: Dana Libscomb; and her two beloved canine companions: “Mable” and “Lily”, Dachshund sisters whom Kristen had since they were puppies.
