My dad was always active in our lives and would gladly help anyone out that needed it. He was the type of man you could call almost anytime and he would jump in his truck to come help. Except maybe in the middle of the night if he was sleeping – we learned early on not to wake dad if he was sleeping…the term let sleeping bears lie comes to mind…probably where I got it from since I’m the same way.
Throughout his life my dad loved to square dance, ride motorcycles across the country doing poker runs, plowing fields, driving his tractor in parades or displaying them at shows and taking down syndrome kids on hay rides…he looked forward to doing that every year and would have a big smile on his face as he drove them around. Many of which touched his heart too.
There are many memories and stories of my dad…I remember going to the grocery store with him when I was little and standing by him as he talked to someone for what seemed like forever…after he was done, he grabbed my hand and we were walking out and I said “who was that dad?” and he said “I don’t know that was the first time I met them.” I remember wondering how could someone talk to a complete stranger like they were long time friends? As an adult I understand it more but back then it just didn’t make sense…but that was my dad.
One of my fondest memories was when I was 5. I was in morning kindergarten and would get off the bus in the front of our house at noon. I had a go-cart that I loved to drive so my dad would have it sitting at the end of our driveway, gassed up and ready to go. I would get off the bus, give him a kiss, hand him my stuff and jump on the go-cart and off I would go until I ran out of gas. I would drive it so much around our house that for years we had a big circle with no grass. He had it ready every single day.
I can remember my dad playing ball with me and my brothers – Rich and Norm. The 3 of us kids would line up at one side of our yard and my dad would hit to us and we would play a game called 500. The object of the game was to be the first one to reach 500 – you got 25 points for ground balls, 50 for line drives and 100 for a pop fly. We all loved playing that game with him.
I remember during the holidays playing games, especially euchre. Sometimes my dad would willingly play and other times he didn’t really want to so everyone would tell me to convince him. I would sit on his lap and flash my brown eyes at him with a sad face and say “please dad” and he would say “okay”. It tickled me how easy he was to convince.
Fast forward a few years when Fritz and I got married…We decided to have a renaissance wedding where everyone wore clothing from the 16th-17th centuries. I remember wondering how my dad would handle doing that since he was never really into that time period. If we would have had a western wedding though I knew he would be all for it. To my surprise when I called him and told him what we were doing and that he would have to wear knickers he said “what ever you want honey this is your wedding.” I think he was a little tickled dressing up in something other than a suit so it worked out well.
I could go on and on with memories of my dad. I hope all of you have fond memories of my dad that you will cherish forever as well. I know I will miss him every single day but I know he is at peace and out of pain. I love you dad.
Love,
Tammy

There are so many great memories. It's really hard to put one or two. But the best memories is him taking the time teach me thing I need to know from how to fix thing or just thing I need to get through daily life. He wasn't just my grandpa he was my mentor. Someone I looked up to. Another great memory is watching him play with my kids (his great grandkids) he always made them feel special and made sure they knew they were loved.
