Obituary of Lillian Schaarschmidt

Lillian Mary Schaarschmidt was born in Carleton, Michigan on May 13, 1917. She was one of six children born from the union of the late Oran Haines and Iona (Deck) Haines.
Lillian married the love of her life, Herman Schaarschmidt on June 22, 1935 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Monroe, Michigan. From this union would come birth of three children.
Lillian was a very loving mother and cherished every moment she spent with her children. She helped support her family driving school bus for Airport Public Schools for thirty-three years and had co-owned a bakery and beauty shop. She became the President of the Local VFW Auxiliary, Post 4093 of Carleton, Michigan for many years. Lillian retired in 1980, and traveled the world visiting all fifty of our states along with a visit to the Holy Land.
Lillian was extremely energetic and could not spend her time sitting around. She loved to square dance and make crafts. She made beautiful stone fish bowls and Christmas trees out of toothpicks and Styrofoam balls. Lillian also built her own swimming pool entirely out of stone and concrete. She became especially fond of electrical tape after her many years of crafting. Her creations will be forever cherished by her family.
Lillian Mary Schaarschmidt, age 97 of Carleton passed away; Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Mercy Memorial Nursing Center with her family by her side. In addition to her parents and her husband: Herman, her passing was preceded by three brothers: Dwight , Ralph, and Harry Haines; a sister: Evelyn Sachs; a son: Hilton Schaarschmidt; a son-in-law: Joseph Hazlett ; and a great-granddaughter: Tess Burkett.
To cherish her memory Lillian leaves a son: Oran Schaarschmidt of West Branch; one daughter: Hilda Hazlett of Carleton; a brother: Alfred Haines of Monroe; two daughters-in-law: Wilma Schaarschmidt of Carleton and Carol Schaarschmidt of West Branch; six grandchildren: eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
Friends may gather from 2:00-8:00pm on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. A Celebration of Her Life will take place at 11:00am on Friday, July 25, 2014 also at Merkle's, with Pastor John Martin from Carleton Community Baptist Church officiating. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park for burial.
