William Henry Agnew Bretschneider was born in Toledo, Ohio on December 6, 1923. He was the son of the late Raymond P. Bretschneider and the late Leona (Niezgocka) Bretschneider. William served his country honorably in the United States Navy, and later earned his Master's Degree. He married the love of his life the former Virginia Haynes and the young couple moved to Michigan making their home, Luna Pier in August of 1954. William took employment with Sun Oil of Toledo. Here he would work as a mechanical engineer for more than twenty-nine years until his retirement. William was a quiet man. He was an excellent provider for his family and always lived by example letting actions speak louder than his words. William believed wholeheartedly in community involvement and volunteer service. For many years he served the City of Luna Pier as a volunteer firefighter and as a part time police officer. William was a longtime member of the Toledo Masons. In the early 1970's the family made their home in Pennsylvania where he enjoyed serving as a volunteer for the Ronald McDonald Golf Tournament. Somehow even with all his activities, William found a little time for himself. He received quiet solace in his two favorite pastimes; hunting and fishing.
