Obituary of Kenneth Powell

June 7, 1947 - April 4, 2014 Kenneth Dwayne Powell was born in Lafollette, Tennessee on June 7, 1947. He was the son of the late James M. Powell and the late Margaret (White) Powell. The family moved to Monroe when Kenneth was a young boy. Kenneth or better known as Chick by his friends attended Lincoln School. He married the former Robin Wood in Monroe, and was the father to Renee and Rhonda. Chick was a great provider for his family. He supported them with a lot of hard work. Chick was employed by Local 465 as a laborer for more than thirty-two years retiring in 1998. Chick to say the least was one of a kind. Everyone loved to be around Chick and he enjoyed socializing, and visiting "The Card Room" on the East Side. He was very straight forward and always a hoot "razzing" his buds whenever he had a chance. Golfing, fishing, and playing pool were all hobbies. Chick was an avid NASCAR fan and rooted for the #4 car, Kevin Harvick. He cherished time spent time with grandchildren. Meatloaf and goulash were his favorite two dishes. Kenneth age 66 of Erie passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, April 4, 2014. In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by three brothers: Tilford Gibson, William Powell, and Johnny Powell; and a sister-in-law: Jean Powell. To cherish his memory Chick leaves his wife: Robin Powell of Monroe; two daughters: Renee (Tom) Miller and Rhonda (Jamie) Balwin both of Monroe; one sister: Katie (Donald) Steinman of LaSalle; two brothers: Edsel (Ruth) Powell of Drummond Island and Odevia Powell of Monroe; five grandchildren: Ricky, Destiny, John David, Taylor, and Cherri; three great grandchildren: Aniyah, Faith, and Addellae, many nieces and nephews: and host of friends including: Ricky Cloum whom he spent a great deal of time with sharing both good and bad times. Cremation has taken place through Southern Michigan Services in Livonia. Friends may gather from 10:00am until 12:00pm, Friday, April 11, 2014 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe (734) 384-5185. A Celebration of His Life will take place at 12:00pm with Pastor Mike Anthony of the House of Restoration officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Kidney Foundation.
