Robert Anthony Simons was born in Greenville, Pennsylvania on May 12, 1954. He was one of three children born from the union of the late Aloysius Simons and Phyllis (Albough) Broms. Robert was a 1972 graduate of Lakeview High School in Stoneboro. He married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Vickie Stamp, on November 2, 1974.
Robert attended broadcasting school and worked as a radio DJ for station WPIC in Sharon. Later, he worked many years in sales for a media and marketing group. Robert and Vickie moved to Monroe in 1991. He took employment with the Monroe Evening News serving as a Sales Director until his medical retirement in 1995.
Robert was very outgoing and had a keen sense of humor. He was well-known for his tall tales, often sharing with family and friends. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, cooking, and baking. His greatest joy, however was being in the company of his family and especially the grandchildren.
Robert was an active member of St. Joseph Parish teaching Catechism for many years and singing in the church choir. He was a people person, and well-known for his tall tales. Robert was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He had a strong passion for history, specifically the Civil War, and Presidents Lincoln and Kennedy.
Robert, age 60 of Monroe, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 19, 2014 at Mercy Memorial Hospital. In addition to his father, his passing was preceded by his paternal and maternal grandparents.
To cherish his memory Robert leaves his beloved wife of thirty-nine years: Vickie; his mother and stepfather: Phyllis and Willard Broms; four children: Rob (Danelle) Simons, Peter (Cathy) Simons, Colin (Amanda) Simons, and Rhiannon (Guy) Linderman; a brother: Ron (Myra) Simons; a sister: Donna (Dan) Burris; and eighteen grandchildren.
Friends may gather on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe (734) 384-5185 from 2:00pm until a Service of Remembrance at 7:00pm with Dr. Tony Lynn officiating. He will lie in state from 10:00am until the Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00am on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 924 East Second with Father James Smalarz officiating. Procession will follow to Roselawn.
