Obituary of Bing Meyer

Laverne Albert “Bing” Meyer was born on September 23, 1929 on his family’s farm in Carleton, Michigan. He was one of seven children born to the union of Albert Leopold and Elizabeth Margaret (Liptow) Meyer. After graduating from Carleton High School with the Class of 1947, Laverne proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in California, Panama, and Greenland between February 1951 and November 1952. A Marine Engineer, he was part of a five-man crew of the 370th Engineer Amphibious Support Regiment. On April 26, 1958 he wed the former Marie Ann Schassberger at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Carleton. They enjoyed sixty-three years of marriage and were blessed with five daughters and three sons.

Bing was employed as an electrician at Ford Motor Company in Monroe. Dedicated to his trade, he furthered his education by attending classes through Ford and correspondence school. After a career of forty-five years, he retired in 1997. His thirst for knowledge led to subscriptions of nearly a dozen magazines including: National Geographic, Antique Power, Reminisce, Archeology and History. He loved to watch PBS and read the newspaper daily and looked forward to the comic strips every Sunday. A social and friendly person, Laverne looked forward to sharing stories with others about his parents, his time in the Army, and especially his work at Ford. When his children were young, he was a 4-H leader and taught the kids everything to do with electricity.

He loved to sing and was part of the St. Patrick Church Choir for several years. Bing shared his enjoyment for waltzing, square dancing and Polka with his wife and daughters. With the help of his family, he cultivated a large vegetable garden every Summer to enjoy. Laverne welcomed the challenge of completing a difficult crossword puzzle and researching the origins and meanings of words and surnames. One of his favorite books to read was the telephone book! If he were visiting a new place, he’d always go through the local edition to count how many “Meyer’s” lived in the area. Laverne was a member of the Carleton American Legion Post 66.
