Obituary of Newell George Austin
Newell George Austin was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on September 26, 1946 to the union of Herman and Ethel (Bryant) Austin. On February 5, 1966 Newell was joined in marriage to the love of his life, the former Lorene Gregory. They would be blessed with a son and a daughter. To provide for his family Newell worked hard his entire life, retiring in 1988 as a construction laborer working out of the Laborers Union Local 465 in Monroe, Michigan.
More than anything else, Newell treasured spending time with his family and friends. He had a deep appreciation for the great outdoors and enjoyed fishing for Walleye and Perch in Lake Erie with his friend, Dave Russell. He also loved camping and frequented Cedar Lane RV Park in Port Clinton, Ohio, Sunset Acres campground, and Totem Pole campground in Petersburg, Michigan. Newell enjoyed riding his Honda motorcycle and was affiliated with the Iron Coffins Motorcycle Club in Monroe and Toledo, Ohio. No matter what Newell was doing he always had his favorite drink, Pepsi in hand. According to his family, he was a very loving and generous man who would give you the shirt off his back if he liked you. Newell will be sorely missed by his favorite dog, Scrappy- Doo, who was always by his side.
Newell Austin, age 74, of Toledo, Ohio passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at the Promedica Ebeid Hospice Residence in Sylvania, Ohio surrounded by his loving family. In addition to his passing, he was preceded in death by both his parents; his daughter in-law: Monica Austin in 2020; two brothers: Charlie and Eddie and two sisters: Dorothy and Betty.
To cherish his memory, he leaves his wife: Lorene Austin; one son: Jeffrey Austin; one daughter: Sherry Austin-Keith; one sister: Nancy McFarland; one brother: Herman Austin; three grandchildren: Kristie Austin, Jeffrey Austin, Jr. and Faith Austin and his faithful companion: Scrappy-Doo.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 28, 2021 at 1:30pm at LaSalle Township Cemetery on Swartz Road in LaSalle, Michigan. Friends may join the family at Merkle Funeral Service South Monroe: 14567 South Dixie Highway, Monroe, Michigan 48161 at 12:45pm to process to the cemetery. Newell’s urn will be driven to the cemetery on the back of his son Jeffrey’s motorcycle for his last ride.
