Valerie Ann Kiley (1971-2020)
I met Val after the passing of her son, Alex in 2010. Val’s in-laws, Hal and Cherry Weekly, lived next door to my business at the time. Val always said she did a healing grief movement with me. I suppose that was true as she healed from grief in many ways through the loss of her son’s life, the loss of her marriage, and then finally as she faced the end of her life. I was inspired and taken by her grit and reliance and this inspired me to develop my first movement-fun-raiser in honor of Alex to support the sunflower garden at Meadow Montessori school to represent Alex’s memory.
From that point on Val and I would meet for coffee from time-to-time to discuss business, life, and healing. She always told a story that during one of those meetings I inspired her to move forward and to develop her business in 2014 which is known as Da Vinci's Brain. I had no idea, I was simply having a conversation with a friend, those conversations where you see the best in someone and you mirror back to them their greatness.
In 2015, I was attending grad school in Maryland and Val was working in Baltimore at the Sailing Center. We used to joke about how our lives were running parallel in some ways. Over lunches and some dinners, we continued our discussion of life.
The first thing I noticed about Val was her big eyes and it didn’t take long to realize that her eyes matched her heart. It is that big open heart that I will remember and celebrate most. What I appreciated about Val was her ability to adapt to change and the courage that it took to grow through diversity. What will I remember most about Val is her smile, her love for education, her kindness, sincerity, and her general belief that everyone is good, means well, and deserves the space to learn and heal in the manner that they need. What I will miss most about Val is the ability to message her to meet up at the coffee shop to talk authentically about life good and bad.
In 2018, when Val was diagnosed I was so mad because I had witnessed over the last 10 years how she had overcome so much and her hard work was manifesting into her dreams. It wasn’t fair! It’s not fair that her children won’t see her smile, creative spirit, and a warm hug at graduations, weddings, births of babies, and so on. But, when I reached out to Val she was at peace and handling things with grace as she took one day at a time. She prioritized healing and creating memories with her three lovely children. Imparting as much wisdom as she could so that her spirit would be with them always. She even created memories with her high school classmates as we now planned a movement-fun-raiser in honor of her. That day was so powerful and an honor to witness. Her life was not faint. Her memory will always be with family, friends, colleagues and her legacy will continue through her three beautiful children. I am so grateful for having known Valerie Ann Kiley.

I remember beautiful Valerie from high school. I always loved her sweet smile and beautiful dimples! My cousin, Danielle, was a very close friend of hers, and my brother, Danny, was a very good friend to Adam. I enjoyed following her inspiring career and was in awe of her strength. Her life and legacy leaves a beautiful and lasting impression on so many. She is one of those souls who truly made the world a better place.
Sending my love and healing prayers to her family and many friends,
