John Albert Rice was born in Monroe, Michigan on February 10, 1937. He was the son of the late John J. Rice and the late Dorthy (Rodd) Rice. He attended Airport Schools graduating with the Class of 1954. John was a self-employed as a farmer for more than sixty years. He raised cows and award winning pigeons, and mowed hay. John made his home in the Carleton area for all but twenty years while he lived in Pinconning. He was very involved with 4-H and had spent many hours working at the Michigan State Fair as a judge. John loved gardening and had an amazing green thumb. He bred his own flowers and planted nearly 600 different breeds. His work led him to become very involved with the Michigan State University Horticulture program, and he received national recognition for his contributions to agriculture. When John wasn't in the fields, he could often be found wood-working or shooting pool. He was involved in several different clubs including the muff tumbler and garden clubs. John Albert Rice age 77 of Carleton passed away at 7:33am, Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Mercy Memorial Hospital. He had been under the care of Mercy Memorial Hospice. His passing was preceded by his parents. To cherish his memory he leaves one son: Donald Rice of Pinconning, Michigan; one daughter: JoAnn (Larry) Bigelow of Moran, Michigan; a stepson: Albert (Sandy) Schanck of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan; two stepdaughters: Linda (Robert) Pingot and Barb (Mike) Zapoluch both of Pinconning, Michigan; two sisters: Margaret (Chuck) Smith of Ida and Barb (Frederick)Schossau of Muskegon, Michigan; one brother: Ron (Jay) Rice of Temperance, Michigan; numerous grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place through Southern Michigan Services in Livonia, Michigan. No public services are planned and a private memorial service will be held at a future date. Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185 has been entrusted with his arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial donations for those who desire are suggested to the Monroe County 4H Program.
