Mr. Dygert was my Webelos (Cub) Scout Leader during the 1975-76 school year. We were Den 1 of Pack 9. I was in fifth grade at the time at Meryl S. Colt School in Lansing, Michigan (Waverly Community Schools). Mr. Dygert lived directly across the street from the school and he held weekly den meetings at his home. He was a kind and caring person who had a lot of patience and understanding for all of the boys in our Webelos den. I remember, like yesterday, when he took our Scouting group to the Michigan State Capitol building for a tour. I have always had a fear of heights and I can vividly recall Mr. Dygert trying to get me to stand near the second floor railing to view the interior of the capitol. I was so scared but he held my hand and walked with me, step by step, so that I would not miss out on anything. Mr. Dygert instilled a lot of confidence in me. I was a very shy 10 year old boy, but he really helped me come out of my shell and achieve a great deal in Scouting. I earned every Webelos activity badge pin that was available at the time and crossed over into Boy Scouting in June 1976. Mr. Dygert also taught me that all of us have a responsibility in life to volunteer for the things we believe in. Years later, in the late 1980s, I returned to Pack 9 to volunteer as a Webelos Scout Leader for two years and then became Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 9. After taking a break from Scouting for nearly 20 years, I again returned to Cub Pack 9 as the Cubmaster in 2010. I followed my Webelos Scouts into Boy Scout Troop 9 where I again became Scoutmaster in 2012. All of this is because of the example the Mr. Dygert set for the rest of (then) boys to follow and learn from. I wish I could have attended his Celebration of His Life memorial on July 30, but I just today learned of his passing. On the behalf of my parents (who remember him well) and I, please pass along our condolences to his family. I do remember his son Paul from our Cub Scouting days.

So sorry to hear of Gary's passing. I saw his obit in the Lansing paper and was not able to attend his memorial. Gary was one of the nicest, most caring men I have ever met. I worked with him in Scouting and Kiwanis in Lansing. He suffered much, but never let his disability keep him from helping others. Rest in peace Gary, you deserve it! Thank you for helping so many others.

Our friendship started several years ago while disgusting MSU football in the River Park Plaza dining room. We were at different tables and I was having difficulty hearing you so I invited you to my table. We talked about everything and you always asked about my tennis matches. I truly miss my “lunch time” friend. Bill
