Obituary of Mary Lou Cooley

Mary Lou Cooley, 75, Dundee, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at her home with her family at her side. Born on July 8, 1936 in Detroit, the daughter Peter Gillenkirk and Donald and Dorothy (Butler) Wells. Mary Lou moved to Dundee in 1937. On November 8, 1952 she was united in marriage at the Dundee Methodist Church to Jack Eli Cooley and celebrated her 59th wedding anniversary in 2011. She graduated from High School in 1956 and attended Monroe County Community College, majoring in accounting. Before starting her family, Mary Lou worked as a clerk typist at Petersburg Metal Products, Michigan Employment Security Commission, Willow Run and at The University of Michigan. After her children started school, she worked for Stuwe’s Pharmacy and later Wheaton’s Pharmacy. At 52 she returned to the University of Michigan. She retired in 1998 due to health issues. Mary Lou served on The Dundee Village Planning Commission From June 1984 until November of 2011. She was an active member of the Dundee United Methodist Church for 65 years and her great love was the choir. She sang for 54 years until health issues prevented her. Mary Lou also enjoyed making candy, decorating cakes, sewing, quilting and watching television (ME-TV and NCIS). She was a member of the Democratic Party and The Red Hat Society. She is survived by her four daughters: Wendy Gray of Dundee, Lora (Rene) Crombez, of Adrian, Rose (George) Landry of Dundee, and Connie (Harral) Landry of Dundee. The true joys of her life were her six grandchildren: Crystal (Will) Glover of Ft. Bliss, Texas, Jason (Liz) Gray of Converse, Texas, Theresa Day of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Tara Mitchell of Allen Park, and Hannah and Olivia Landry both of Dundee, and her ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, James (Norma) Peterson of Canton. Her husband, Jack Cooley, and three infant grandsons preceded her in death. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13 at The Dundee United Methodist Church. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 14 at The Dundee United Methodist Church.
