Obituary of Richard L. Rod

Richard L. (Spank) Rod, age 76, of Hillman, Michigan, formerly of Monroe and Dundee, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2015 at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor. Spank was born March 17, 1939 at Petersburg the son of Dallas A. and Alma Mae (Wittman) Rod. He attended Dundee Community Schools where he graduated in the Class of 1957. Following his schooling he worked at Weyher’s Economy Market, Art Lang Ford Dealership and then his father’s business – Rod’s City Service and was a Dundee Village police officer before joining the Monroe County Sheriff Department in the 1960’s. Retired in 1995 which is when he moved to Hillman. He started as a patrolman with the sheriff department, was a canine officer having 3 dogs, the most special being Duchess, was the jail administrator and was a shift commander. Spank married Jane Bellen Oct. 27, 1956. He then married Deborah Hill March 7, 1981 at Monroe. She passed away July 14, 2003. He is survived by children: Ricky (Linda) of Alpine, CA, Robin Moon ( Earl) of Dundee and Rebecca Fisher (Charlie) of Maybee; grandchildren Tye Rod, Nicole Moon and Misty Fisher; great-grandchildren Ethan, Bradan and Riley Rod; brothers Dallas (Corky) of Monroe and Clarence Larry (Butch) (Sandy) of Dundee; sisters Karen O’Connor of Dundee and Cindy (Donald) Labert of Brighton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and twin grandsons Steven and Shane. Friends may call on Sunday from 2 – 7 PM at the Cover Funeral Home, 297 Tecumseh Street in Dundee (734-529-3156). Memorial services will be held at 11 AM Monday, August 10th at the funeral home. Officiating will be his son Ricky and Rev. Douglas Olsen, retired pastor of the Dundee United Methodist Church. In accordance with his wishes cremation has been held. There will also be a memorial gathering at 1 PM, Thursday, August 13th at the Rust Township Hall, Cohoon Road in Hillman, Michigan, 49746. Memorials in his name may be made to the Monroe County Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.) , Robert A. Hutchinson Lodge 113 for fallen officers or to the Michigan Humane Society.
