Obituary of Leon Edward Spaulding

Leon E. Spaulding, age 93 of Petersburg, passed away Thursday morning, March 21, 2013 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born at home in Dundee Township on November 4, 1919 the son of Burton and Lena (Seems) Spaulding. He married Delores (Dee) Lemley February 27, 1943 in Texas while he was stationed there in the US Army. They celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary in 2013. Leon attended school in Dundee and started working for the Dundee Ford Motor Plant in 1941. He then went to work at the Ypsilanti Plant until his retirement in 1974. He served in the Army from 1943-1945, attaining rank of Staff Sergeant and was a prisoner of war during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Dundee; the Dundee POW Post 62 and the Dundee VFW Post 6462. He also was an assistant at the Buhl and Buhl-Cover Funeral Home in Dundee. He was a very talented man who enjoyed building his own homes with his wife, enjoyed hunting and making things and was a scout leader when his children were young. He received the Purple Heart, European Theater Ribbons, Bronze Campaign Stars and Good Conduct Medal Citations. His survivors include his wife Dolores (Dee), a son Robert L. (Karen) Spaulding of Lake Leelanau, MI and a daughter Lana (Chris) Kanitz of Dundee; grandchildren Chandra Spaulding, Kevin Spaulding, Dean (Erin) Kanitz and Corey (Michelle) Kanitz; great-grandchildren Eli Spaulding and Callie Kanitz. He was preceded in death by siblings Laura Steel, Ethel Bowman, Edith Gee, Charles Spaulding, Leroy Spaulding and Russell Spaulding. Friends may call on Saturday from 3 – 6 PM and also on Sunday from 4 - 8 PM at the Cover Funeral Home, 297 Tecumseh Street in Dundee (734-529-3156). His funeral will take place at 11:00 AM, Monday, March 25, 2013 at the funeral home. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Blissfield. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Dundee Veterans Military Group.
