Obituary of Alice Yarwood

Alice Melanie Schleh was born in Saline, Michigan on May 31, 1910. She was one of three daughters born to John and Melanie (Schmid) Schleh. She attended the University of Michigan where she won a position on the debating team and became a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. She earned her B.A. in 1932 and her M.A. in Education in 1939. Alice first taught at one room Judd School house in Saline. She advanced her career by making moves to high schools in Ferndale, North Muskegon, and Bessemer, Michigan and Joliet High School and Junior College in Illinois, where she taught English and speech and directed plays, including "Peg of My Heart".
On April 22, 1944, Alice married Clare G. Yarwood a Cincinnati attorney at the chapel in the League at U of M. Following their nuptials Alice left teaching.
Alice became an integral member of the Cincinnati Community. She served on the Cincinnati Council of Camp Fire Girls for fifteen years. She chaired several committees and was President for three years when she received Camp Fire's highest honor, the Luther Halsey Gulick award for her leadership and her unprecedented growth of the local organization. She was co-founder of the Eagle Republican Women's Club of Cinncinnati, and worked with voter registration and as a delegate to the polls. She was also a member of the Cincinnati Women's Club where she participated on committees and in classes. Alice enjoyed season tickets to the Cincinnati Symphony for nearly sixty years. As members of Hyde Park Golf and Country Club, she and Clare enjoyed golfing, swimming, and social activities. She was an avid walker, and enjoyed sewing clothes for herself and her nieces and nephews. In 2002 Alice moved closer to Monroe to be closer to family.
Alice Melanie Yarwood age 99 passed away December 1, 2009 at the Alice Lorraine Care Center where she had been a resident since 2006. In addition to her parents and her husband (May 31, 1980) her passing was preceded by a sister: Helen Schleh at age seven.
She leaves to cherish her memory a sister: Ruth Webster of South Rockwood, MI; nieces Melanie (Don) Mascilak and Jeanne (Keith) Cronenwett of Carleton, MI, nephews Dan (Kathy) Webster of Gross Pointe Park, MI, Tim (Evelyn) Webster of Reed City, MI, great nieces and nephews Joel Cronenwett, Leslie Cronenwett, Matt Webster, Becky Webster, Tom Webster, Kelsey Webster, Jimmy Webster, and Michael Mascilak. She also leaves to cherish her husband's niece and dear friend, Clare Burnett, and her family.
Cremation has taken place. The family will hold a memorial dinner in her honor this Sunday. A memorial service will take place on December 22 at 3:00pm at the Hillside Chapel, 525 West Martin Luther King Drive, Cincinnati where inurnment of her cremains will take place next to her beloved husband.
