Obituary of Dorothy Teresa Hoffman

Dorothy Teresa Hoffman was born on October 23, 1935 in Frenchtown Township, Michigan. She was one of two children born from the union of her parents: the late Carl O. Hoffman and the late Stella (Pilawski) Hoffman. At the age of seven, Dorothy was diagnosed with Scarlett Fever rendering her mentally disabled. She received her early education at Sandy Creek School in Frenchtown Township and later, at St. Mary’s Catholic School. 

As a young woman, Dorothy assisted her parents with the operation of their store: Hoffman’s Market on North Dixie Highway.  She loved going to the “workshop” run by Comprehensive Services for the Developmentally Disabled, where she was a productive member of the workforce for years until she retired in 2000.   She lived at home with her parents until her later adult years and most recently has lived at Magnum Care in Monroe for several years. While living there, she enjoyed countless hours working on arts and crafts and playing games with her friends, especially Bingo.

Dorothy was a member of St. Anne’s Church and always looked forward to going to the annual festival to mingle with members of her parish. She loved spending time with her family and enjoying the company of her aunts and uncles growing up and also with her nieces and nephew.

Dorothy Teresa Hoffman, age 83, of Monroe, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Magnum Care in Monroe after a brief illness. Her passing is preceded by her parents and several aunts and uncles.

To cherish her memory, she leaves her brother: Thomas (Marta) Hoffman of Monroe; her nephew: Charles “Tommy” (Bogdana) Hoffman of Petersburg; her nieces: Cheryl Hoffman of LaSalle and Cheri Hoffman of Southgate; and many extended family members and friends.

In accordance with Dorothy’s wishes, cremation will take place and no public services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements have been entrusted to Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe, 2442 North Monroe Street (734)384-5185.

Dorothy always was so appreciative of her caretakers and health care providers, often holding their hands to show her appreciation.   The family wishes to thank Magnum Care of Monroe, ProMedica Monroe Hospital Emergency Department and third floor staff, and ProMedica Hospice for all the care and compassion provided to Dorothy and her family.
