Alfred Overstreet

Obituary of Alfred Lee Overstreet

Alfred Lee Overstreet was born in Monroe on May 14, 1953.   He was the son of the late Aubrey Walters and the late Ethel Lee (Allen) Overstreet.   He attended Monroe Public Schools.

On November 19, 1972, Al joined Leemay Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit under Rev. McClinden.   Al gave his first sermon bringing in the New Year on December 31, 1972.   In 1975, he was ordained under the Reverend J.C. Jones at Second Missionary Baptist Church in Monroe.   He then planted his own church in Monroe, Newstone Missionary Baptist Church in 1977.

Al married, the former Dana Jones on August 21, 1976 at First Missionary Baptist Church in Belleville.   On February 12, 1987 he was called to serve in Milan at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church.   In 1995, he returned to Monroe starting Al Overstreet Evangelistic Ministries serving as Pastor until 2015.

A faithful servant of the Lord he was also a devoted husband and father.   He was a mentor to children and adults just the same.   Whether he was witnessing to government officials, boxing champions, or being an avid supporter of the YMCA Strong Kid’s campaign, Al was a voice for the community for the weak and the downtrodden.   His efforts included serving on the YMCA board and being selected for the Community Service Award, but Pastor Al knew his real reward was in Heaven.

Putting his faith first and knowing that God would never lead him astray contributed to his being a truly genuine human being.   He was a people person and extremely outgoing.   Al supported his ministry and his family with employment by the Detroit Stoker Company a combustion equipment operator for thirty-one years.   He retired in 2004 as a stock clerk.

Al enjoyed tennis and gardening, was well known for his famous Rib-Offs, and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren.   Pastor Al considered one of the highlights of his life was the opportunity to baptize his own children and to see them become part of the church.
