Obituary of Lawrence William Millar

Lawrence William Millar was born in Hazel Park, Michigan on August 21, 1937. He was the son of the late Clarence Millar and the late Virginia Palmatier. Larry attended Berkley High School and graduated with the Class of 1955. Following graduation, he took a position with Bell Telephone (now AT&T) as a splicer.

Larry would enlist in the United States Navy on August 29, 1958 serving aboard the USS Harry E. Hubbard.  He married the love of his life, the former: Carole J. Sinclair on November 29, 1958 in Hazel Park. He was honorably discharged on August 27, 1962. Larry continued his employment with Bell Telephone (now AT&T) for more than thirty years retiring in December of 1989.  

Larry and Carole made their home in White Lake, Michigan for many years moving to Mackinaw City after retirement. The couple enjoyed sharing adventures and traveling also having a home in California. As a young man, Larry started a Boy Scout Pack when there wasn’t one.  

He had a great sense of humor, loved to socialize, and enjoyed a cold beer. He was personable and loved to have fun, often dressing in drag for his community anniversary to garnish more than a few laughs. Larry enjoyed golfing, deer hunting with Dave and Brett in Northern Michigan, and elk hunting in Colorado.

Lawrence “Larry” William Millar, age 81, of Mackinaw City passed away at 3:50am on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Henry Ford Hospital in Wyandotte. He had been under the care of Seasons Hospice. In addition to his parents, his passing was preceded by his son: Larry Millar Jr., a brother and sister-in-law: Thomas and Betty Millar, and a half-sister and brother-in-law:  Leona (Bert) Woodcraft.

To cherish his memory he leaves a beloved wife of nearly sixty years:  Carole of Mackinaw City; son:  David (Elizabeth) Millar of Estral Beach; daughter:  Michelle (Brett) Hoyt of Denver, Colorado; daughter-in-law:  Sandy Millar of Hickory, Pennsylvania; sister:  Sharon (Raymond) Zamiska of Sterling Heights; six grandchildren:  Bridgette (Adam) Gracia, Larry (Grace) Millar, Courtney Millar, Nicole Albee, Heather Albee, David Millar Jr.; and six great grandchildren:  Aiden, Liam, Brennan, and Riley Millar, Lily and Zoe Albee

Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 8:00pm on Friday, October 19, 2018 at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe, 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185. Funeral services will take place in the mausoleum at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at White Chapel Cemetery, 621 West Long Lake Road, Troy, Michigan 48098.   Father John Lancaster of Seasons Hospice will officiate.
