Obituary of Michael Lee Bellg

Michael Lee Bellg was born on June 7, 1928 in Toledo, Ohio to Charles Michal and Mary (Hannah).  He graduated from DeVilbiss High School and went on to serve as a sergeant with the United States Army 11th Airborne landing in occupied Japan following the end of World War II.  He received the WWII Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan.  Near the end of his service, and prior to his honorable discharge in 1948, Mike, noted that he was able to play on the first golf course in Japan.

Mike was a commercial photographer learning the craft through an apprenticeship with Harold Waltz that began in 1948. Years later, with his friend Tony Walbridge they opened Walbridge & Bellg in 1952. The firm rose to be the premier photography studio in Toledo.  Beginning work with 8x10 cameras, film and darkrooms to digital cameras, Mike championed the changes in his industry. Walbridge and Bellg was shortened to W&B in the 90’s and finally closed its doors in July 2002.  Mike continued to share his passion of photography and video through Michael Bellg Productions until he semi-retired in 2014.

Mike traveled worldwide capturing images of the corporate world, its people and the making of glass, insulation, shock absorbers and more. He was an artist on film through his work, winning many awards and accolades. From the World’s Fair to beautiful resorts around the world, Mike put on presentations for corporations. Mike served as the President of the Professional Photographers of Ohio several times in the late 50’s and early 60’s.

Mike loved the water whether swimming or boating.   He was an avid sailor on Lake Erie, and an active member of North Cape Yacht Club.   Though he had several sailboats big and small it was “Fiasco”, aptly named for his many sailing adventures, that he won numerous flags, including the Club Championship in the JAM fleet in 1995.  He was a veteran of the Mills Race having raced over 20 years in the series. Mike also served on many committees and activities for the club.

Michael Lee Bellg passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at Ebeid Hospice Residence.   His passing was preceded by his parents and a sister: Phyllis Bell.
