Obituary of Shirley June Giljum
Shirley June Mayes was born on April 27, 1930 in Monroe. She was the daughter of the late Sterling Benjamin and Marguerite Leola (Gates) Mayes. She attended Christiancy School and graduated with the Class of 1948 from Monroe High School.
Shirley married the love of her life, Frank Giljum, at St. Paul United Methodist Church on September 24, 1949. From this union came the birth of five children. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. As a meticulous cleaner, wonderful seamstress, and an excellent cook, Shirley, was attentive to the needs of her family always making sure they were cared for, and even helping to raise granddaughters: Elizabeth and Peggy.
A devout woman of Christian Faith. Shirley shared her beliefs with her family. She was a member of the Plymouth Brethren Church in Dundee. She often listened to Christian Radio, day and night to keep up with current happenings and to stay close to her Lord. Being quite selfless and generous, she had a special place in her heart for the orphans and those less fortunate.
As a child she grew up in a home with only three books, the Bible, Shakespeare, and the Albert Hubbard Scrapbook. These literary pieces shaped her life and led to a love of scripture and poetry. Shirley was blessed with a sharp mind, quick wit, and the gift of conversation; often helping with advice or just a friendly ear for those in need.
