Obituary of Mary Smith

Mary Margaret Toporek was born in Dearborn Heights, Michigan on June 11, 1941. She was the daughter of the late John Toporek and the late Anna Lesniewski (Toporek). She was a 1958 graduate of Roosevelt High School where she would meet her husband Robert Huff and marry in 1961.
After his passing she married Claude Henry Smith Jr. on July 9, 1966. For several years, Mary worked as a Dental Hygienist, but after the birth of her children she became a homemaker and took on the responsibility of raising the children.
When she had the chance to get out, Mary enjoyed going to the casinos. She loved watching sports, the Detroit Tigers, the Red Wings, and the NFL. Mary was very adventurous and was willing to try anything, including learning how to ride a four wheeler and shoot shotguns. She loved spending time surrounded by her family and friends; especially her children and grandchildren, and enjoyed going to the lake to barbeque.
Mary Margaret Smith, age 72 of Carleton passed away on March 18, 2013 at her home, surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Heartland Hospice. In addition to her parents and her two husbands, her passing was preceded by a son: William Huff; a grandson: David Ives; brothers: John, Bernie, Ralph, and Casimir Toporek; and sisters-in-law: Marge Toporek and Helen Toporek.
To cherish her memory she leaves behind five children: Heidi Ives of Carleton; Claude "Tim" Smith of Erie, Joseph Huff, Bradley (Kelly) Smith, and Daniel Smith all of Carleton; one sister: Barbara (Gary) Traven of Florida and three brothers:Connie Toporek of Dearborn, Gregory (Carol) Toporek of Trenton and Vince Toporek of Florida; sisters-in-law: Angie Toporek, Loretta Toporek, and Pat Ruxlow all of Florida; nine grandchildren: David Ives, Charlie Ives, Melissa (Clint) Harrison, Robert Huff, David Beattie, Sean Lane, Sarah Lane, Willow Smith, and Pierce Smith; and three great grandchildren: Connor Harrison, Owen Harrison, and Brody Ives.
Friends may gather from 2:00-800pm on Friday, March 22, 2013 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe (734) 384-5185. The Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, March 23 at St. Patrick Church with Father John Dumas officiating. Procession will follow to Our Lady of Hope Cemetery.
