Scott Edward Yoakum was born January 17, 1928 in Lone Mountain, Tennessee. He was the son of Horace Yoakum and Ester (Leedy) Yoakum. He attended schools in the mountains of Tennessee before starting work at an early age. At the age of 16 the Yoakum family moved north to Michigan. Scott would call Monroe home for the remainder of his years. He enlisted in the United States Army on April 18, 1946 and served honorably as a Private. Following his discharge from the service, Scott found the love of his life Margaret Hargis. They were joined in marriage on June 25, 1949 in Monroe. From their union Scott and Margaret were blessed with two children; a daughter: Pamela and her husband Hank Runyan of Carleton and a son: Robert Yoakum of Monroe; five loving grandchildren: Amanda and Laina Yoakum, and Kayla Walerius all of Monroe, Scott (Michele) Runyan and Amee Runyan all of Carleton; and two great grandchildren: Brianson Tillman and Ty Tillman both of Carleton. A brother: William (Wilma) Yoakum; a brother-in-law: Don (Marlene) Hargis; and a sister-in-law: Betty Roberts all of Monroe and several nieces and nephews also shared memories. Scott set the bar high when it came to being a role model for his family. He was never scared of long hours or hard work. He spent thirty-one years employed by the Ford Motor Company. Scott worked as a laborer performing many tasks throughout the years including the fabrication of coil springs. He had also worked as a Monroe County Deputy Sheriff Reserve and part-time with the Carleton Police Department. He retired in 1981. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Scott enjoyed outdoor activities including cutting wood and visiting the family cabin Up North in Glennie, Michigan. Scott Edward Yoakum, age 80, of Monroe, passed away on November 7, 2008 at Fountainview. He and his family were under the guidance Heartland Hospice and Homecare. His passing was preceded by his parents, a sister and brother-in-law: Dorothy and Arthur Cutshaw; a brother-in-law: Elmer Roberts; and a granddaughter: Hannah Yoakum Cremation has taken place, and private family services will be held.
