Obituary of Joyce Ione Hulvey
Without a doubt, Michigan's finest resident was born in Monroe on August 10th, 1926 and her name was Joyce Ione Carter. Her parents were Byrd and Martha Deering Carter. It's our guess that they saved the best for last, as she was the youngest of seven children.
Without a doubt, Michigan's finest resident was born in Monroe on August 10th, 1926 and her name was Joyce Ione Carter. Her parents were Byrd and Martha Deering Carter. It's our guess that they saved the best for last, as she was the youngest of seven children.
Although Joyce was raised during the Depression, her family managed to make the best of it and she learned to roller skate, which she dearly loved! On February 12th, 1944 (at the age of 17), Joyce married the love of her life, Leo E. Hulvey at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Monroe. Later, she discovered her love for sports; and became an active member of a softball team!
In addition to her parents and husband, Joyce is preceded in death by brothers: Bill, Harold, and Jimmy Carter; and sisters: Hazel Horvath, Mattie Carter and Pearl Harris.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of her contagious personality, is her children: Dennis Hulvey and wife Sharon, of Monroe, Michigan and Patricia Daniels and husband Dave, of Linville, NC. Also, left to cherish and carry on her beautiful laughter are her grandchildren: Thomas Hulvey of Monroe, MI, Jamie Hartley and husband, Casey, of Linville, Tasha Daniels of Linville and Tricia Dean and husband, Edward, of Newland, NC. Wonderful memories of her life experiences will be re-told through her five great-grandchildren: Megan Jackson, Makayla Hartley, Noah Hartley, Kalleigh Dean and Reagan Dean. For many years to come, stories will be shared about Grandma Hulvey, and re-told to her two great, great-grandchildren, Kaden and Bentley Jones. Special friends she cherished were Diane Welch, Diane Bohan and Faye Hughes. But the numbers don't stop here, she had countless loved ones that "adopted" her as their Grandma Hulvey. In fact, when someone asked her name, she would laugh and say, "Well, most people just call me Grandma Hulvey, so you can call me that too!"
She loved singing in the church choir in Monroe, Michigan. In fact, most of her ninety-one years of life was spent living there; and she sang in the choir for forty-five of those years! She later moved to Cumberland Gap, TN and resided there for several years. But, most recently, she made her home in Linville, NC. We can't say that she had any buildings named after her; or monuments place in her honor, but to know Grandma Hulvey was to love her and once you knew her, you could Never forget her!
She didn't have a lazy bone in her body! Even while raising her children, she managed to work in retail stores, such as J.C. Penney. She was very talented; and enjoyed being a seamstress for her family, making outfits and doing alterations. But perhaps one of her favorite hobbies was working outdoors! There, you would find her mowing and weedwacking, as she called it, even after she turned ninety years old!
She also liked to keep her family informed; meaning, she was the best little meteorologist around. Grandma listened to the weather intensely; and in the winter, was the first to announce if it was going to snow. But in the summer, she could tell you if you would be able to work outside, or, if you better plan something to do inside because it was going to rain.
Grandma loved reading her Bible and going to church. Her favorite scriptures can be found in the book of Psalms, Chapters 23 and 91. She was a sincere lady and when she realized that she needed to get baptized in Jesus' name as the Bible tells us, she did....EVEN though she was almost 90 years old! Grandma was an honest lady as well. Never, was she late on paying a bill or any debt!
Obviously, Linville lost one of its best residents when Joyce Hulvey (Grandma) left her earthly home on Saturday morning, October 21st, 2017 to enter into the presence of the Lord! But she had a couple of little sayings that must live on: One was, "I'm just throwing it out there" the other one was "Now, you know what I'm trying to say!" In response to these sweet comments that helped make up the Grandma that we love, let me say: Thank you sweet Grandma, for throwing it out there to us! and YES, we know exactly what you meant; cause no one could say it more perfectly that you!!!
