Obituary of Leonard Rohn

Leonard Irven Rohn, age 83, of Monroe, Michigan, was called home to heaven on December 3, 2012, after a brief illness. He was born to Irven and Martha (Libstorff) Rohn on September 24, 1929. Leonard lettered in football and was a 1947 graduate of Monroe High School. He was joined in marriage to the former Virginia VanEeckhoutte on June 2, 1951, in Temple, Texas. He served his country honorably during the Korean War as a Corporal in the United States Army from January of 1951 until December of 1952. To cherish his memory he leaves a beloved wife, A. Virginia of Monroe; five children: Karen (John) DeSloover, Laura Stininger, Leonard Rohn II, Brenda (Gary) Lewis all of Monroe, and Marilynn (Terry) Dunn of Temperance; nine grandchildren: Janna (Jamie) Krysynski, Joel DeSloover , Elizabeth (Steve) Bryant, Jennifer Stininger, Jeremy (Nicole) Valentine, Daniel Valentine, Scott (Denise) Hudson, and Jason and Jenny Dunn; four great-grandchildren: Gray and Ingrid Krysynski, Mason Hudson, and Landon Bryant, and a sister: Beatrice Toburen. His passing was preceded by his parents; a sister: Evelynn Lewis; and a brother-in-law: Winford Toburen. Leonard was employed at the Monroe Evening News for 43 years retiring in April of 1991. He was a man of great faith and a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Monroe where he was still serving as an usher and with the Tape Ministry. Leonard was a member of Monroe VFW Post 1138. He enjoyed wine making and had been an avid fisherman. Leonard loved working in his yard and gardening. He loved to spend time with his family, completing Sunday crossword and Sodoku puzzles. Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 8:00pm, Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street, (734) 384-5185. He will lie in state from 10:00am until a worship service celebrating his life in Christ at 11:00am, Thursday, December 6, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 323 Scott Street. The Reverend Jeffrey Heimsoth will officiate. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle where graveside services will be under the auspices of Monroe VFW Post 1138. The family has requested memorials be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
