Leo Xavier Johnson Sr.
January 13, 1923—July 9, 2012
Leo Xavier Johnson was born on January 13, 1923 in Monroe, Michigan. He was the son of the late Edward Johnson and Lena (Weatherholt) Johnson. He married the love of his life, Beatrice Marie DuVall on January 17, 1942 at St. Mary's Parish. From this union came the birth of five children, who were their pride and joy.
Leo served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1943-1946 attaining the rank of T-5. He was employed at Leake Stamping for 25 years, La-Z-Boy for 5 years, and Beach Nursing Home, retiring in 1985.
Leo was an accomplished carpenter, having built 5 of his own homes. He loved camping and bowling. He had enjoyed playing his guitar as a young man. He was a lifetime member of the Monroe VFW Post 1138 serving on their building and entertainment committees, American Legion Post 514, and Monroe Senior Citizens. He was an avid bingo player. Leo and Beatrice renewed their vows on their fiftieth wedding anniversary, also at St. Mary Parish.
Leo 89 of Monroe passed away at 2:16pm Monday, July 9, 2012. In addition to his parents, his passing was preceded by his beloved wife: Beatrice on October 19, 1993; four brothers: Varnom, Harold, Henry, and Leonard; and three sisters: Clara, Driscella, and Viona.
To cherish his memory he leaves three daughters: Diane (Roger) Dusseau of LaSalle, Sheila (Tom ) Haynes of Maybee, and Janice (Brian) Mayes of Monroe; two sons: Leo (Debbie) Johnson Jr. of Monroe, and Ron (Shelly) Johnson of Monroe; his companion of eighteen years: Betty White; fifteen grandchildren: Roger, Robyn, Steven, Michael, Tommy, Patrick, Chad, Mary, Jody, Jamie, Dawn, Brandy, Samantha, Sean, and Katrina; forty-one great grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren.
Friends may gather from 2:00-8:00pm, Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. He will lie in state from 9:00am until the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00am, Thursday, July 12, 2012 at St. Mary Parish, 101 North Monroe Street with Father Marc Gawronski officiating. Procession will follow to Roselawn Memorial Park where graveside services will be under the auspices of Monroe VFW Post 1138.
