Obituary of Dorothy Valentine

Dorothy Jeanette Smith was born in Toledo, Ohio on February 22, 1925. She was one of five children born from the union of the late Raymond Smith and the late Leota Bellnir. Dorothy met the love of her life at the age of sixteen, Harlon R. McKimmy. They were married on November 19, 1942 and celebrated their 36th Wedding Anniversary before he passed in 1979. Together they moved from Ohio to the Adrian area, eventually making South Rockwood their home. Dorothy was a hard worker. During WWII Dorothy she was employed by American Chain & Cable and later Dorothy helped support her family as a cashier for CF Smith Grocery Store for fifteen years. Dorothy knew how to live life to the fullest. She was member of the Brownstown Pleasure Seekers for 20 years, a member of the Red Hat Society and Monroe Moose. Dorothy loved to spend time with her friends; playing cards, dancing and going to the casino. Dorothy received her spiritual nourishment at United Methodist Church in South Rockwood where she was a Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir. Family meant the world to Dorothy. She was a wonderful mother and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Dorothy Jeanette McKimmy Valentine, age 89, of Monroe passed away at 11:14 pm on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Fountainview of Monroe. In addition to her parents her passing was preceded by her husband Harlon McKimmy in 1979; a step-daughter: Shirley Aslanian; one sister: Betty; three brothers: Paul, William and Raymond. To cherish her memory Dorothy leaves her daughter: Debra (Daniel) King of Monroe; twelve grandchildren: Michael (Michelle) Aslanian, Donald (Debra) Childers, Karen Sue Childers, Brian (Judy) Aslanian, Jeremy King and Kenneth (Sara) King; ten great-grandchildren; a niece: Karen Lee; several nieces and nephews. Friends may gather from 11:00am-4:00pm; Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe (734) 384-5185. A Celebration of Her Life will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 4:00pm also at Merkle's with Pastor Tom Carr of North Monroe Church of God officiating.
