This is the obituary for my Aunt Joan. She was a great lady of many talents. For years she had a home tucked away on Lake Erie. It was behind Toledo Beach Marina. It was at that Marina that my Uncle Ray was a very well known and respect mechanic for many years. The home was miles from anything. You would never have known the location unless someone told you. In fact, in the winter you needed a truck to get to her house.
But it was every bit worth the drive. Her yard was gorgeous. It was not at all unusual to see deer or peacocks in her yard. When you looked out her front door you would see this beautiful yard and about 40 feet beyond that was her private beach. If you went down to the beach you would see a small island across from it. The island was private. You never seen another person on it.
As children I would spend a week at my Aunts house each summer. My cousins and I would take paddle boats across the lake to the other island. I will never forget Aunt Joan packing our lunches. It would generally include, PB & J sandwiches, chips and a thermos of Kool-Aid. We would spend the day at that little island playing and eating those sandwiches garnished in sand : ) In the mornings, she would have us pick blueberries and she would make blueberry pancakes.
When we were not at the beach we would walk two miles to the store up the road, collecting pop bottles along the way. We would collect our refunds and each got a bag of penny candy.
It seemed like a long walk, but so much fun. As there was an old amusement park along that way that had mostly been washed away over the years. But some of the rides and ballroom stood intact. We would have the best time playing in that ballroom.
At night we would have a camp fire and roast marshmallows while she sang to us. It was always such a great time!
Some of the most magical childhood memories were made by Aunt Joan's house .She was a beautiful lady with a beautiful heart. I love you and will miss you dearly. My heart goes out to her children. May you have the peace of knowing that God is with you during this time. God Bless.
