Obituary of Arthur James Overstreet

Arthur James Overstreet was born on August 31, 1945 in Monroe, Michigan. He was the son of the late Nathaniel and the late Ethel (Allen) Overstreet. Arthur attended Monroe Public Schools before his family moved to Detroit in 1960. While attending Detroit Public Schools he ran track and was an exceptional high jumper, graduating in 1963. Arthur married Hazel Davis on January 15, 1967. From this union came the birth of two sons. He worked as a butcher for many years retiring from Hillsdale Meat Packing in 1992. Arthur enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He often planned gatherings with his nieces and nephews to ensure that everyone would get together. He had a great sense of humor and he enjoyed making others laugh. Arthur liked to stay busy and could often be found playing horse shoes, dominoes, checkers, and spades. He was also an avid fisher casting lines wherever possible. Arthur had a keen ear for music of all genres, especially his Motown and loved to watch a good old western. Arthur stayed active by taking long walks. He enjoyed sports and especially cheering on his watching his favorite Detroit teams. Arthur was known for his head attire, from dress caps to ball caps. Arthur James Overstreet, age 71, of Monroe passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at ProMedica Monroe Skilled Care & Rehab. In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by his grandmother: Willie Ann Allen; brothers: John Henry and Ronald Overstreet; sister: Albertina Overstreet; his daughter: Andrea Epps; step-father: Clarence Austin; and his former wife: Barbara Jean Overstreet. To cherish his memory, Arthur leaves his sons: Darnell Maurice Overstreet of Romulus and Michael Antwan (Jennifer) Overstreet of Westland; sisters: Emily McNair of Mississippi, Charlotte Williams of Detroit, Tracy Overstreet of Roseville, Margie (Tyrone) Powers of Monroe; brothers: Rev. Alfred (Dana) Overstreet of Monroe, Charles Austin of Mississippi and David Appling of Detroit; aunts: Mary Anderson of Detroit and Verlene Allen of Monroe; grandchildren: Tiara Overstreet, Jordyn Overstreet, Tiffany Overstreet, Zyshonne “Caine” Horton and Zaniyah “Blue Blue” Epps. Friends may gather on Friday, February 3, 2017 from 10:00am until a Homegoing Celebration at 11:00am at Merkle Funeral Service; South Monroe, 14567 South Dixie Highway (734) 241-7070.
