Obituary of Steven Lewis Walters
Steven Lewis Walters was born on April 7, 1944 in Battle Creek, Michigan. He was one of three children born from the union of the late Dr. John Walters and the late Phyllis (Cannon) Walters. Steven was a 1962 graduate of Battle Creek High School and went on to receive his Master’s in Public Administration at the University of Michigan.
During his thirty-six year career, Steven supported his family as a City Manager for St. Ignace, Northville, Plymouth and Belleville, retiring in 2007. He was a past president of the Rotary Club of Belleville, a member of Northville Kiwanis Club and was awarded Michigan Public Servant of the year in 2000.
He was a kind, caring and loving with an amazing sense of humor and intellect. He gave great advice and was well respected by his family and friends.
Steven enjoyed traveling with his wife and family get-togethers. He especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren who will forever remember him as their “Bumpa.”
In his quiet time, Steven could be found creating stained glass works of art, assembling Lionel and Thomas the Tank Engine model trains, or watching his favorite political television shows.
Steven Lewis Walters, age 72, of Monroe passed away at 11:17am on January 13, 2017 at Promedica Monroe Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family. His passing was preceded by his parents.
To cherish his memory, he leaves his beloved wife of twenty-five years, Beverly; three sons: David (Suzanne Flannery) Walters of Brockton, Massachusetts, Tom Walters of Beverly Hills, Rich Walters, Chicago; one daughter: Marilyn (Dan Huber) Meadows of Monroe; one brother: Dr. Bruce (Dr. Jean Dunigan) Walters of Brighton; one sister: Martha Austin of St. Mary’s Kansas; four grandchildren: Alex Walters and Maya Walters of Beverly Hills, Michigan, Timothy “T.J.” Grove and Jamie Marshall of Monroe.
Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 8:00pm on Monday January 16, 2017 at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe, 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe (734)384-5185. He will lie-in-state from 10:00am until a Celebration of His Life at 11:00am on Tuesday January 17, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church 323 Scott Street, Monroe with Pastor Jeffrey Heimsoth officiating.
