Obituary of Helen Josephine Miska
August 19, 1929 – July 11, 2016
Helen Josephine Miska was born in Detroit on August 19 1929. She was one of seven children born from
the union of the late Benjamin and the late Josephine (Markowski) Chwastek. Helen was a 1947 graduate
of Chadsey High school in Detroit, Michigan. She later married the love of her life, Andrew Leo Miska, on September 16, 1950 at Assumption Parish in Detroit. Helen had a heart of gold and extraordinary family values, her children were always her first priority. She
hosted numerous events in her home, along with holiday gatherings. Helen received her spiritual
nourishment weekly as a member at St. Charles Catholic Church in Newport. In her free time, she
enjoyed sewing, crocheting, puzzles and bingo. She adored her grandchildren and never passed up a
chance to hold a baby. Helen Josephine Miska, age 86, of Carleton, passed away at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital on
Monday, July 11, 2016. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded by her sisters: Jennie
"Patsy" Winczkowski and Wanda Gondek. To cherish her memory, Helen leaves behind her loving husband of sixtyfive years: Andrew Miska;
seven children; Angela (Douglas) MiskaCameron of Georgia, Andrew N. (Ann Marie) Miska of Florida, Monica (William) Polk of Livonia, Holly (Albert) Waters of Canton, Jessica (Gregory) Chapman of
Oklahoma, Matthew (Karen) Miska of Carleton, and Stephen (Rhonda) Miska of Newport; two sisters:
Lillian (John) Gonzales of California and Bernice Andrews of Redford, two brothers: Forest “Van”
(Micheline)Chwastek of Dearborn and Christopher (Dean) Chwastek of Canton; fourteen grandchildren
and four great grandchildren. Helen will lie in state from 10:00am until the Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00am on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at St. Charles Catholic Church, 8125 Swan Creek Road, Newport, MI. with Father Anthony
