Richard Dale Hannum, age 74, of Luna Pier, Michigan, died at 5:45 p.m. Monday in his home. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Covenant Cremation and Funeral Society. A memorial service will be held at a later date. He was born October 2, 1932 in Joliet, Illinois, the son of Lloyd and Mae (Heft) Hannum. He served in the United States Air Force in Korean War from 1952-1955 and was honored with medals. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois and a Masters Degree from Easter Michigan University. On September 10, 1989 he married Michaeline Werbicki, who survives him. Mr. Hannum was a teacher in the Garden City Public Schools from 1967 to 1986, in the business and co-op training program. He retired due to illness. He belonged to the BPOE Lodge 1731 Flat Rock Elks for 35 years and was a lifetime member of the American Legion and attend Monroe Missionary Baptist Church. Some of his hobbies included volunteering for the Humane Society of Monroe, camping at Sterling State Park, day trips and watching his favorite football team, The Chicago Bears. He was a volunteer parole officer for the 35th District Court and a participant in the Edmund Fitzgerald Anchor Recovery Project. Mr. Hannum was proud to say that he walked the Mackinac Bridge 3 times. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hannum is survived by 2 daughters, Kathy (Mark) Gibbons of Orlando, Florida and Julie (Tony) Satterfield of Peachtree City, Georgia; 2 sons, David Hannum of New Baltimore, Michigan and Scott Hannum of Orlando, Florida; 10 grandchildren; his beloved Husky, "Tonya", and his cat, "Amber". He was preceded in death by his mother in 1988 and grandparents. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to the Humane Society of Monroe, the Flat Rock Elks, or Mercy Memorial Hospice.
