Robert Leroy Barron Sr.
December 2, 1934 - March 28, 2010
Robert Leroy Barron was born in Monroe, Michigan on December 2, 1934. He was the son of the late Roy I. Barron and the late Cora M. (Emerich) Barron. Robert was baptized at St. Charles and attended the parish school. He attended Monroe Catholic Central. Robert served his country during the Korean War as a member of the Air Force from 1952 until 1956. Robert married his childhood sweetheart the former Shirley Wiseman on May 18, 1957.
Robert continued service to his country with the Air National Guard until 1967. He was hired as the Assistant Fire Chief for the Woodhaven Stamping Plant in 1967 and the following year became Fire Chief and later obtaining the title of Security Supervisor for the Monroe Ford Plant before his retirement in 1998 after thirty-one years of employment.
Robert held many positions in his service to the Newport Volunteer Fire Department retiring as Fire Chief in the 1970's. He had served as a youth baseball coach for St. Charles as well as a Scoutmaster for Troop 133. He was a former member of the Monroe Council Knights of Columbus 1266, St. Charles Usher and Dad's Clubs. Robert was a member of VFW Post 1138 and the Newport Firefighters Association.
Robert age 75 of Newport passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 28, 2010. He had been under the care of Mercy Memorial Hospice. In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by a sister: Alice Druyor in 2008.
His memory will forever be cherished by his beloved wife: Shirley of 52 years; six children: Robert (Carol) Barron Jr. of LaSalle, Gerald (Debra) Barron of Temperance, Bradley (Alice) Barron of Ida, Jeffrey (Debra) Barron of Carleton, Pamela (Rob) Lindsay of Newport, and Todd Barron also of Newport; a sister: Margaret Gildersleeve of Riverview, eighteen grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren with another on the way.
Friends may gather from 1:00-8:00pm, Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe (734) 384-5185 where a fire department walk through will take place at 6:30pm followed by a Scripture Service at 7:30pm. He will lie in state from 10:00am until The Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00am, Wednesday, March 31, at St. Charles Parish, 8109 Swan Creek. Burial will follow under the auspices of Monroe Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1138 at the church cemetery.
